Officially termed “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis”, this popular procedure for laser vision correction is best known as LASIK. It is the most common refractive eye surgery performed in the United States, and used for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Your eye surgeon will use a laser to reshape your cornea, with the goal of improving visual acuity. LASIK offers many people a way to see sharp without eyeglasses or contact lenses.
LASIK is quick and painless, with very little or no discomfort after the surgery and a rapid recovery. Although there are no guarantees that LASIK will provide perfect eyesight, the vast majority of patients experience 20/20 vision within 24 hours!
The first part of our LASIK co-management services consists of a friendly meeting between you – our valued patient – and our eye doctor. We will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have about LASIK and the recuperation. It’s important that you are informed and prepared before you enter the operating room!
Candidacy for LASIK
Our optometrist will evaluate your vision condition and ocular health to determine if you are a good candidate for the laser surgery. Typically, LASIK patients must be over 18 years old, have an appropriate corneal thickness, and be in good general health.
Eye conditions such as keratoconus, dry eye, cataracts and scarring may disqualify you from candidacy for LASIK. Additionally, your vision must be stable for a minimum of one year before having the surgery. If our eye doctor decides that you are a good candidate, you will be referred to a top eye surgeon in the Coronado area.
The LASIK Procedure
This surgery is performed by your eye surgeon on an outpatient basis. You will walk into the surgical center and walk out about one hour later. Using a microkeratome (laser), the surgeon will create a thin flap of tissue on your cornea. The hinged flap will be folded back in order to facilitate laser reshaping of your eye. The laser treatment takes about a minute or less, and then the flap is repositioned over your eye.
The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes. You will initially need to wear clear protective shields over your eyes. Although you will be able to see adequately to walk, you cannot drive yourself home. On the day of the surgery, your eyes will need rest and it may be more comfortable to stay in dim light.
Following your surgery, you will need LASIK co-management to inspect for proper healing. There is no need to return to the hospital for follow-up eye exams. You can depend upon our compassionate Coronado optometrists to keep close watch on how your vision heals!
Generally, our eye doctors will check your eyes on the day after your procedure within the comfort of our convenient eye care clinic. We’ll instruct you on how to preserve your healthy eyes. To prevent infection and help the healing process, you’ll need to apply medicated eye drops a few times a day for about a week or more. Artificial tears may also be helpful for keeping your eyes lubricated and comfortable. Make sure not to rub your eyes!
Routine eye exams are an essential part of our LASIK co-management services. Even as you now enjoy perfect vision, you’ll still require evaluations of your ocular health. In addition, we will monitor your vision to ensure that it remains stable after LASIK.
